Green Tribunal Slams UT Admin Over Market Project Violations
26 Mar
Summary
- NGT issued notice to UT administration over environmental violations.
- RTI activist alleges felling of 332 trees without permissions.
- Project accused of violating environmental clearance and public trust doctrines.

The National Green Tribunal's principal bench has issued a notice to the UT administration, demanding a response within a week regarding alleged environmental violations in the proposed Bulk Market project in Sector 56. The action was initiated based on a plea by RTI activist Rajinder K Singla.
The project, planned over approximately 44 acres with 191 one-kanal commercial plots and 48 booth sites, reportedly lacks mandatory Environmental Clearance (EC), Consent to Establish (CTE), and Consent to Operate (CTO). The application highlights that preliminary activities involved felling nearly 332 trees without requisite permissions.
Furthermore, the plea asserts that no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study, public consultation, or statutory appraisal process was undertaken. The project is accused of violating environmental principles like the precautionary principle and sustainable development, infringing citizens' right to a healthy environment.
Before approaching the tribunal, the activist filed an RTI application on September 9, 2025, seeking environmental approval details. Despite the 30-day deadline, no information was provided even after nearly 180 days, prompting the NGT intervention. The petitioner seeks a comprehensive EIA, restoration of ecological damage, and environmental compensation.
