NGT Slams India Agencies Over Polluted Yamuna River
25 Apr
Summary
- NGT issued notices for unchecked Yamuna pollution and illegal constructions.
- Untreated sewage and industrial waste contaminate the river.
- River Yamuna remains unfit for bathing or domestic use.

Notices have been issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to key government bodies, including the Union Jal Shakti Ministry and the Uttar Pradesh government, addressing the ongoing unchecked pollution and illegal constructions along the Yamuna River. The Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation is also among the agencies facing scrutiny.
This action stems from a petition highlighting the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste into the river, alongside encroachments on its floodplains. These violations allegedly persist despite NGT's 2021 directives aimed at improving sewage treatment and protecting the river's ecosystem.
Evidence, including water quality reports and geo-tagged photos, was submitted to the tribunal, depicting drains directly discharging into the Yamuna and ongoing construction activities. Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the NGT has requested detailed responses from agencies like the Central Pollution Control Board and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board before its next hearing in August.
