NGT Brings Ganga Mission into Sahibi River Pollution Fight
4 Mar
Summary
- National Green Tribunal added the National Mission for Clean Ganga.
- Sahibi River pollution now under central-level environmental monitoring.
- The tribunal scheduled the next hearing for April 22.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has broadened the scope of its investigation into pollution affecting the Sahibi River. In a significant development, the tribunal has formally included the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) as a respondent in the case. This inclusion marks the first instance of the Sahibi River pollution issue being subjected to central-level environmental monitoring.
The NGT's decision, made during a February 25 hearing, stems from the Sahibi River's eventual drainage into the Yamuna and subsequently the Ganga. The tribunal recognized that pollution in the Sahibi has 'wider implications' beyond its immediate region. Consequently, the NMCG has been directed to submit its response by the next hearing scheduled for April 22.
This case originated from a petition filed by social activist Prakash Yadav, who raised concerns about untreated sewage, industrial waste, and encroachments contaminating the Sahibi River. The collected pollutants near the Masani barrage pose risks to groundwater and the local ecosystem. Yadav expressed optimism that the involvement of the Ganga Mission would ensure accountability from all relevant agencies for the environmental damage.
