NGT Tackles Tiny Caps: A Big Step for India's Recycling
24 Feb
Summary
- Detachable bottle caps often escape recycling, unlike PET bottles.
- India's NGT has taken note of this plastic waste pollution issue.
- The tribunal has issued notices to companies and regulatory bodies.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is addressing a critical gap in India's plastic waste management concerning detachable bottle caps. While PET bottles are commonly recycled, their caps often become environmental litter, as highlighted in a recent petition. The NGT has taken cognizance of this pollution, noting that many countries are adopting 'tethered caps' to ensure caps are recovered with the bottles.
On February 20, 2026, a bench led by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava issued notices to the Central Pollution Control Board and several beverage and mineral water companies. These respondents are required to submit their responses by e-filing affidavits before the next hearing on February 26, 2026. The matter has been consolidated with existing cases on plastic waste management and extended producer responsibility.
