17 Oct
Summary
- NGT seeks report on chromium contamination of groundwater.
- Residents suffer skin issues from yellowish, toxic borewell water.
- Chromium levels found 1,000 times above safe limits.
The western zone bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Pune has mandated a comprehensive action taken report from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Nashik district collector. This report, due within four weeks, addresses the alarming chromium contamination of groundwater. The NGT's directive follows an application highlighting severe pollution impacting residents in Nashik's Dattanagar and surrounding areas.
Residents have reported persistent itching and skin diseases linked to the use of yellowish borewell water. A recent MPCB water test confirmed chromium concentrations at 45 ppm, vastly exceeding the prescribed standard of 0.05 ppm. The tribunal noted this dangerous discrepancy, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and directing the district collector to immediately provide potable water to the affected communities.
