A new species of montane toad has been discovered in Mizoram's Phawngpui National Park by research scholars from Mizoram University. The discovery, published in the Indonesian journal Taprobanica, was made during an expedition to the Blue Mountain region.
The toad, identified as Duttaphrynus Phawngpui, was found near the summit of Phawngpui Mountain, approximately 2,144 meters above sea level. This find adds to the 23 known species of the Duttaphrynus genus globally, with 17 previously identified in India.
Professor H.T. Lalremsanga, who supervised the research, expressed amazement at the toad's ability to survive at high altitudes and in cold conditions. The discovery is considered a significant indicator of Mizoram's diverse and unique flora and fauna.
