Summary
- A new toad species, Duttaphrynus dhara, discovered in Meghalaya.
- Named after Dhara, the traditional Khasi women's attire.
- Found near forest edges, preferring semi-natural habitats.

A recently documented species of toad, named Duttaphrynus dhara, has been discovered in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district. Researchers chose the name to honor 'Dhara,' the traditional attire worn by Khasi women, symbolizing the community's rich cultural identity and deep connection to the region's natural environment.
This small, forest-associated toad was identified during field surveys in the Mawphlang landscape. It exhibits distinct physical characteristics, including a compact body, rough skin with numerous warts, and a brown coloration with irregular black patches. Unlike common Asian toads often found near human settlements, Duttaphrynus dhara appears to favor forest edges and semi-natural habitats such as fallow agricultural fields.
The discovery, based on an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology and genetic data, confirms the species' distinct lineage within the Duttaphrynus genus. Its current known distribution is limited to its type locality, making its documentation crucial for conservation. The finding underscores the Meghalaya plateau's significance as a center for amphibian diversity and endemism within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot.
