Croatia recently announced the creation of its 13th protected landscape, the Zagorje Mountains Nature Park, located approximately an hour from the capital city, Zagreb. This new nature park spans over 115 square miles across the Krapina-Zagorje and Varaždin counties.
The park encompasses several mountains, including Ivanščica, which reaches an altitude of 1,060 meters and offers views of the Slovenian Alps and Hungary. Other notable mountains like Strahinjščica and Maceljske are forested, providing scenic hiking opportunities.
Ravna mountain, a 686-meter peak, is known for its hiking trails, paraglider launch points, and a lookout offering views of the historic Trakošćan Castle. The Zagorje region itself is rich with rural villages, castles, and thermal spas.
This designation aims to preserve the area's geodiversity, with the park recording 1,200 species and subspecies of flora, including 12 native species, and over 30 native animal species. Consequently, more than 38 percent of Croatia's total land area is now protected.
