The University of Florida has officially opened its upgraded Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience and Sea Turtle Hospital. This $41.2 million facility spans 38,000 square feet and represents a major enhancement for marine research and animal rehabilitation along Florida's coast. The new building is designed to connect cutting-edge genetic research with the immediate needs of local marine life.
The sea turtle hospital capacity has been more than doubled, expanding from eight to approximately 20 patients. This expansion is crucial for treating animals like green sea turtles suffering from conditions such as fibropapillomatosis. The facility also boasts 12 advanced laboratories supporting the Whitney Lab's recognized work in neuroscience, genetics, and environmental science.
Funding for the $41.2 million project was a long-term effort. City officials anticipate the laboratory will bring significant scientific prestige to St. Augustine, attracting global talent. The first floor is dedicated to public discovery, with plans for seasonal open-house tours to engage the community with ongoing research.
