New Homes Risk Future Uninsurability Due to Flood Risk
29 Sep
Summary
- Future homes face uninsurability due to escalating flood risks.
- 115,000 new homes are projected to be built in flood zones.
- One in nine new homes are at medium to high risk of flooding.
New residential constructions are raising concerns about future insurability as flood risks intensify. Aviva's chief executive, Amanda Blanc, stated that current building patterns will lead to 115,000 new homes being constructed within flood zones over the coming decade.
Blanc expressed that this situation is unsustainable and necessitates careful consideration of where new homes are situated. Environment Agency data reveals about 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are already susceptible to flooding. Aviva's findings show that one in nine homes constructed between 2022 and 2024 are at a medium to high risk of experiencing floods.
Further analysis by Aviva indicates a significant vulnerability for new homes. Nearly a third of residences built in 2024 are predicted to be at risk of some flooding by 2050. Moreover, one in seven of these new homes could face medium to high flood risks as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.
This trend aligns with broader meteorological observations. The Met Office has reported that severe wet winters, once occurring every 80 years, are now happening every 20 years due to current global warming levels. This exacerbates the danger for properties located in or near flood-prone areas.
