Summary
- New device cuts diesel truck pollution by 90%.
- Cost-effective retrofit kit priced at Rs 4,000-5,000.
- Government plans to approve low-cost emission devices.
The Indian government is preparing to approve a new, cost-effective emission-control device for older diesel trucks and buses. Developed from an innovation at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), this technology aims to drastically cut vehicular pollution.
These retrofit emission-control devices (RECDs) are designed to reduce particulate matter emissions by up to 90% and nitrogen oxide by approximately 60%. They can be fitted onto BS-III, BS-IV, and older diesel vehicles, bringing their emission levels close to those of modern BS-VI vehicles.
The technology has successfully completed testing and is expected to cost between Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per unit. This makes it a considerably more affordable option than replacing entire commercial vehicles.
The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry is working to notify Automotive Industry Standard 228 (AIS-228) for the rollout. This standard will detail the technical specifications and performance requirements for the devices, complementing the government's existing vehicle scrappage programs.
