Summary
- A new bird species, the Tokara leaf warbler, has been discovered.
- This is the first new bird species named in Japan since 1981.
- Research involved international teams from Japan and Sweden.

A newly discovered bird species, named the Tokara leaf warbler (Phylloscopus tokaraensis), has been identified in Japan's Tokara Islands, located in Kagoshima Prefecture. This significant ornithological find was announced by an international research team comprising scientists from Japan's Yamashina Institute for Ornithology and Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, alongside researchers from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
The identification of the Tokara leaf warbler is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first instance of a new bird species receiving a scientific name in Japan since 1981, when the Okinawa rail was formally named. Genetic and morphological analyses confirmed that the Tokara leaf warbler is distinct from the Iijima's leaf warbler, a species it was previously believed to be part of.
