Nelong Valley, situated within Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi, will be accessible for winter tourism beginning December 1, marking its first-ever winter opening. This development was announced by the Uttarakhand forest department during the inauguration of Wildlife Week celebrations. The state intends to leverage this opportunity to promote snow leopard tourism in the high-altitude cold desert landscape.
Conservation efforts are being paired with economic strategies, as officials noted that wildlife tourists tend to spend substantially more than general tourists. The department is actively training local residents in Ladakh to develop skills for promoting snow leopard tourism. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to showcase the region's natural beauty and encourage sustainable tourism practices.
Wildlife Week is being celebrated with the theme 'Connected Habitat, Conserved Wildlife.' The event also recognized individuals for their bravery in human-wildlife conflict situations, with cash awards announced. Awareness programs are planned for key species, including the musk deer, monal, Brahma Kamal, and common peacock, as well as animals involved in human-wildlife conflict like elephants, tigers, leopards, and Himalayan black bears.
