Their presence alarms officials due to their potential to disrupt fragile ecosystems and cause property damage by burrowing for food. This invasive species also carries the risk of spreading leprosy.
Despite these warnings, North Carolina currently has no official strategies in place to impede the armadillos' advancement. Management falls to individual residents who encounter issues with the animals. Wildlife authorities recommend reporting sightings and maintaining distance. While trapping is permitted between November and February, it has proven largely ineffective for population control. Armadillos causing problems on private property may be euthanized, with precautions advised for handling to prevent disease exposure.
