A World War II Nazi warship has emerged from the Danube River in Prahovo, Serbia, as an intense heatwave causes water levels to drop significantly. This vessel is thought to have been deliberately sunk by German forces during their retreat from the Russian Red Army in the conflict's final days.
Across Europe's second-largest river, approximately 200 submerged wrecks, including cargo ships and barges, pose a major obstruction. Some of these remnants still feature visible parts like turrets and twisted hulls. Serbia alone faces an estimated annual loss of five million euros due to commercial shipping delays caused by this underwater debris.
In a related discovery further north in Bulgaria, researchers found the remains of a young woolly mammoth near Ruse, also on the Danube. The unearthed bones included a jawbone, tusks, and limb bones, suggesting the animal spent considerable time in marshy conditions.
