Navi Mumbai Cracks Down on Construction Pollution
10 Oct
Summary
- Construction sites must install 30-foot-high barricades and green nets.
- Tyre-washing facilities and water spraying are mandated for dust control.
- Non-compliance can lead to immediate work stoppage, sealing, and heavy fines.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has ordered stringent enforcement of air-pollution control measures at construction sites to combat rising post-monsoon pollution. Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde directed architects, builders, and officials to implement new rules, emphasizing the health risks associated with deteriorating air quality.
Construction sites must now install 30-foot-high barricades and green nets. Tyre-washing facilities at exits are required to prevent dust spread, along with regular water spraying. The use of drinking water for construction and dust control is prohibited; builders must use non-drinking or treated water. Air-quality sensors and AQI display boards will be mandatory for live monitoring.
Compliance was initially set for October 10. Joint inspections are underway, with violations leading to immediate work stoppages, site sealing, and substantial fines. Commencement certificates will only be issued upon submission of documentation proving adherence to all prescribed pollution-control measures through the BPMS system.
