A substantial gift left in a will has enabled a major expansion of the Jackson's Coppice and Marsh Nature Reserve near Eccleshall, Staffordshire. The generous donation from trust supporter David Aldred will see the reserve effectively double in size.
The newly acquired land comprises wet woodland and marsh alongside pastureland situated south of the River Sow. This expansion offers opportunities to restore habitats on a larger scale.
Future plans for the reserve include managing the floodplain land, such as coppicing alder trees and controlling willow growth, to enhance plant and wildlife diversity. The floodplain will also play a role in slowing the River Sow during heavy rainfall, thereby reducing flood risks downstream.
The expanded reserve will also feature new public footpaths, allowing visitors to explore additional trails and enjoy the enhanced natural landscape. This development highlights the lasting impact of gifts made in wills for conservation efforts.
