National Trust and Insurer Admiral Invest £600K in Nature-Based Flood Solutions
5 Nov
Summary
- National Trust and Admiral partner to fund nature-based flood prevention projects
- Restoring peatlands, creating wetlands, and planting vegetation to absorb water
- Aims to boost wildlife like curlews and dragonflies while reducing carbon emissions

As of November 5th, 2025, the National Trust and insurance company Admiral have announced a landmark partnership to invest £600,000 in nature-based solutions to combat the increasing risk of flooding across the UK. The two organizations will collaborate on large-scale landscape restoration projects in three upland areas: Snowdonia in Wales, the Holnicote Estate in Somerset, and the Lake District in Cumbria.
The National Trust teams will carry out a series of interventions in these regions to help the land absorb more water and slow water flow. This includes restoring the Migneint blanket bog in Snowdonia, creating new ponds and planting vegetation alongside river corridors in the Lake District, and establishing new wetlands in Somerset. The aim is to not only enhance flood resilience, but also boost declining wildlife populations, such as curlews, dragonflies, and water-loving plant species like sphagnum moss.
According to Iago Thomas, peatland officer at National Trust Cymru, the restored habitats will have a "trickle-down impact," with the land acting like a sponge to absorb water, reduce carbon emissions, and create thriving environments for various species. This investment in nature-based solutions is a landmark moment, allowing the National Trust to scale up its efforts and deliver real-world impact for both people and the environment.
