Summary
- Nashik aims for bathing-quality water by May 2027.
- Four new STPs will boost sewage treatment capacity.
- 400km of new sewer lines are being laid to intercept pollution.
Nashik is embarking on an ambitious Rs1,600 crore river rejuvenation project for the Godavari, targeting bathing-quality water standards by May 2027. This initiative is crucial for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The project centers on upgrading sewage treatment infrastructure, with four new advanced sewage treatment plants (STPs) under construction. These new facilities, expected to be operational by March 2027, will significantly improve the quality of treated wastewater discharged into the river, reducing Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels to below 5.
In addition to STPs, Nashik is overhauling its sewerage network, laying approximately 400km of new sewer lines. This comprehensive plan includes intercepting sewage from 29 nullahs and diverting it to the STPs, thereby preventing untreated wastewater from entering the Godavari. The overall sewage treatment capacity in the city will increase substantially upon completion.
This extensive effort extends beyond preparations for the religious gathering, aiming to enhance public health, environmental sustainability, and restore the sanctity of the Godavari River. The flag hoisting ceremony for the Kumbh Mela is scheduled for October 31.
