Nashik Battles Rising Heat with New Partnership
5 Sep
Summary
- Nashik partners with NRDC India to combat heatwaves and climate risks.
- The city aims for sustainable cooling and climate-responsive urban planning.
- Nashik is the first Maharashtra city with a comprehensive heat resilience program.
Nashik is fortifying its defenses against rising temperatures by entering a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with NRDC India. This partnership is designed to bolster the city's preparedness for heatwaves and other climate-related risks.
The collaboration will offer technical guidance and capacity building to Nashik, supporting its efforts in sustainable cooling solutions and climate-responsive urban planning. This initiative is particularly significant as Nashik was recently chosen as one of 12 Indian cities for the Centre's Heat-Resilient Cities program, receiving Rs 5 crore for climate-resilient planning.
Nashik has become the first city in Maharashtra to develop a comprehensive heat resilience strategy. The new agreement with NRDC India is expected to accelerate efforts such as reducing the urban heat island effect, promoting rainwater harvesting, and increasing green infrastructure. Special measures are also being planned for the upcoming 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela to protect pilgrims and vulnerable populations.
This partnership will also involve knowledge exchange and training programs for officials and community groups to build local capacity for climate resilience and sustainable urban development.
