Nashik Tackles River Pollution Ahead of Kumbh Mela
15 Jul
Summary
- Joint survey of city nullahs to identify sewage discharge points.
- Encroachments within river blue-line zone to be prevented.
- Action to be intensified against littering and washing along riverbanks.

In preparation for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Nashik authorities are launching a comprehensive initiative to improve the Godavari River's water quality. A joint survey involving the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) will meticulously examine city nullahs to identify and address sewage discharge points. This survey aims to pinpoint the exact locations where residential sewage enters the river system.
The NMC's town planning department has been directed to prohibit any new construction within the river's designated blue or red-line areas, thereby preventing further encroachments. Joint enforcement drives, involving NMC and police personnel, will be conducted regularly to penalize individuals caught littering or washing clothes and vehicles along the riverbanks.
Furthermore, the NMC plans to expedite the engagement of 80 outsourced workers dedicated to the manual removal of water hyacinth. These combined efforts underscore a determined commitment to significantly reduce pollution levels in the Godavari River.
