NGT Cites Nashik Civic Body Over Tree Felling
29 Mar
Summary
- Thousands of trees allegedly cut for Kumbh Mela preparations.
- NGO petitions NGT, questioning due process for tree cutting.
- NGT has requested a detailed clarification from the NMC.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is facing scrutiny from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over alleged tree felling for Kumbh Mela preparations. An NGO, Manav Uthaan Manch, filed a petition arguing that thousands of trees are being cut for associated projects.
The petition highlights concerns that the municipal commissioner may be overstepping authority by acting as a tree officer in non-emergency situations. It also references a 2015 Bombay High Court order with strict guidelines for tree felling, including public notices and compensatory plantation.
Environmentalists warn of long-term ecological damage, noting proposed cutting of heritage trees like banyan and peepal, contrary to High Court directives. The NMC maintains that infrastructure upgrades are necessary for the Mela, which is expected to draw large crowds.
The NGT, on March 27, directed the NMC to provide a detailed clarification on whether proper permissions were obtained and if activities comply with environmental laws. However, no stay has been granted on the tree cutting yet.
