20 Oct
Summary
- ₹7.5 crore funding for Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary development remains unsanctioned.
- Over 190 bird species documented at the water body, a key site on the Central Asian Flyway.
- Proposed infrastructure includes a conservation center, interpretation center, and nature parks.

Nanjarayan Tank, designated a Bird Sanctuary in September 2022, continues to wait for crucial infrastructure development. The Environment, Climate Change, and Forests Department had announced ₹7.5 crore for the project, aiming to transform the site into a revenue-generating tourism spot. As of October 2026, this funding has yet to be sanctioned by the State government.
The tank, located on the Central Asian Flyway, is a vital breeding and foraging area for numerous bird species, with up to 190 already documented. The Vetry Trust has proactively cleared invasive hyacinth from a significant portion of the water body, leading to an increased presence of birds.
Detailed plans for infrastructure include a central conservation complex, an interpretation and documentation center, nature parks featuring diverse botanical collections, landscaping, and parking facilities. Additionally, a nature trail, watchtower, bird sculptures, and seating areas are proposed. Ravindran Kamatchi of the Nature Society of Tiruppur highlights the need for extensive paperwork, including adherence to Central government guidelines on Eco-Sensitive Zones, to move the project forward.
