Heritage Panel Blocks Lake Building Plan
1 Jul
Summary
- Heritage committee denied NOC for building near Ambazari Lake.
- Several development proposals around heritage sites were rejected.
- Only two event proposals for Kasturchand Park were approved.
The Heritage Conservation Committee in Nagpur has taken a firm stance on development projects impacting heritage sites, most notably denying a no-objection certificate for a proposed ground-plus-six residential building adjacent to the Grade-I Ambazari Lake. The committee has mandated a detailed joint survey by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the Irrigation Department before any final decision is made.
Reflecting a cautious approach, the committee only approved two of the nine substantive proposals it considered. Other significant projects, such as the architectural development of the historic Gandhi Gate and a private construction proposal near the Gateway of Gond Fort, were deferred. These required further documentation or revised plans to ensure adequate setbacks from protected structures.
Additionally, the committee rejected a request for civic funding for paving block works at the privately owned Freemasons' Hall, advising alternative funding avenues. Permission for repair work at the Mahadev Temple was also withheld, with recommendations for estimates through the Archaeology Department. Only event proposals at Kasturchand Park, including Navratri Garba celebrations and a Ravana Dahan program, received approval.
