Nagpur Air Quality Plummets: PM2.5 Hits 'Very Poor' Levels
28 Feb
Summary
- PM2.5 levels stayed above 200 for most of the week.
- Mahal AQI crossed 300 on Feb 21, indicating very poor air.
- Experts warn of aggravated respiratory and cardiovascular issues.

Nagpur's air quality remained a significant concern throughout the week of February 21st to 27th. Ambient Air Quality Index (AQI) readings consistently fell into the moderate category, while critically, PM2.5 levels frequently entered the poor to very poor range across most monitoring stations.
Data from key locations such as Ambazari, Mahal, GPO Civil Lines, and Ram Nagar revealed PM2.5 levels largely exceeding 200, signifying unhealthy air conditions. Mahal experienced the most severe impact, with its AQI spiking to 309 on February 21st and remaining in the very poor category for most of the week. Ambazari and Ram Nagar also recorded persistently high pollution.
A brief improvement was noted on February 24th at GPO Civil Lines, with PM2.5 at 90 (satisfactory), but this was short-lived as pollution levels rose again. Experts are warning that prolonged exposure to these elevated PM2.5 levels can aggravate existing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, posing a particular risk to children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing illnesses. The lack of sustained improvement underscores the urgent necessity for effective pollution control strategies and stricter enforcement across Nagpur.
