Mundka Water Bodies Polluted by Sewage

An action taken report by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) reveals that two out of six water bodies in Mundka, northwest Delhi, are contaminated with sewage. The report indicates that Shishuwala talab and a pond in the DSIIDC Industrial Area are receiving sewage. The NGT case has focused on Shishuwala talab, with plans to trap its sewage and divert it to the Nilothi Sewage Treatment Plant by September 2026.

The second polluted water body, located in the DSIIDC Industrial Area, receives approximately 1 million litres of sewage daily. This area experiences waterlogging due to stagnant stormwater and wastewater from existing open drains. Six unauthorized colonies surrounding the affected land contribute to the pollution, with partial discharge from their septic tanks flowing into the area.

DJB has reported that sewer line work is complete in four colonies and ongoing in the remaining two as part of the Kirari GOC project. This extensive project aims to lay sewer lines in 113 colonies and 6 villages, along with constructing three wastewater pumping stations. The entire sewerage network is anticipated to be finished and commissioned by September 2026.
