Mumbai Mangroves Face Axe for Coastal Road Project
17 May
Summary
- Over 45,000 mangroves are impacted by the Mumbai Coastal Road project.
- About 9,000 mangroves will be permanently cut for the project.
- Activists will form a human chain on May 17 to protest the destruction.

A protest is planned for Sunday, May 17, where citizens, environmental activists, and local residents will form a human chain in Bandra West. This action aims to oppose the perceived destruction of over 45,000 mangroves for the Mumbai Coastal Road project. The project, estimated at over Rs 20,000 crores, is projected to impact 103 hectares of land.
Approximately 60,000 mangroves fall within the project's influence zone, with about 45,000 being directly impacted. Of these, an estimated 9,000 mangroves are slated for permanent removal. The protest, titled "Mumbai Deserves Better - Save Mangroves, Save Mumbai," will take place at the Amphitheatre, Carter Road, Bandra West, from 5 pm to 6 pm.
Activists emphasize the critical role mangroves play in safeguarding Mumbai against flooding, supporting marine life, absorbing carbon, and sustaining fishing communities. They warn that significant mangrove loss could lead to serious, long-term environmental repercussions for the city.
