BMC Chief: Coastal Road Decisions Aren't One-Man Shows
8 Mar
Summary
- BMC commissioner clarified infrastructure projects involve multiple approvals.
- Bombay High Court monitors compensatory afforestation for the project.
- Arboriculture conference discussed balancing urban growth and tree protection.

Mumbai BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani emphasized that significant infrastructure projects, such as the Mumbai Coastal Road (North), are not decided by a single individual. He stated that these projects undergo multiple statutory processes and approvals, involving various agencies and regulatory bodies, even extending to court oversight.
Gagrani highlighted that the Bombay High Court is closely monitoring the project, particularly the compensatory afforestation measures being implemented by the civic body. This comes amidst concerns raised by some citizen groups regarding the impact on approximately 45,000 mangroves.
These discussions occurred during the second International Arboriculture Conference. The event brought together global experts to discuss arboriculture practices for enhancing urban landscapes. Vaibhav Raje of the Amenity Tree Care Association stressed the importance of arborists guiding civic staff on tree preservation.
Sanjay Pandey, Chairman of Nanaji Deshmukh Pratishthan, called for a closer look at balancing urban growth with tree protection for public welfare. Mumbai's Guardian Minister, Ashish Shelar, announced plans for 'tree clinics,' integrated tree funding, and policy within municipal areas, along with celebrating tree literature and festivals.
