Summary
- BMC allocated Rs 20,730 crore for climate initiatives in FY 2026-27.
- Largest share goes to water management and flood mitigation.
- Air pollution management budget decreased compared to last year.

For the financial year 2026-27, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced its annual climate budget, dedicating Rs 20,730 crore, which represents 43% of its capital expenditure, to environmental sustainability and climate change initiatives. This marks the third consecutive year the BMC has presented a climate-focused budget, with this year's allocation increasing from Rs 16,321 crore in the previous fiscal year.
The majority of the climate budget, amounting to Rs 18,080 crore (87.21%), is designated for water resource management and urban flood mitigation. Other key allocations include Rs 1,369 crore for urban greening, Rs 968.15 crore for sustainable waste management, and Rs 156.67 crore for transitioning buildings to clean energy. Integrated mobility also receives Rs 65 crore.
Despite the overall increase in climate spending, the budget allocates Rs 90.85 crore for air pollution management, a decrease from the Rs 102 crore allocated last year. The BMC's document notes that while urban greening and air quality management sectors have seen increased allocations, the primary focus on flood management aligns with its core service delivery mandate.
