Mumbai C&D Waste Gets Online Tracker
25 Aug
Summary
- New portal tracks construction and demolition waste from generation to disposal.
- System covers residents, builders, and government agencies for waste management.
- Vehicles carrying debris will be GPS-tracked to prevent illegal dumping.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a new online portal, the Mumbai Debris Control and Tracking System (MDCTS), to monitor construction and demolition (C&D) waste. This system aims to streamline waste management by tracking debris from its generation point to its final disposal. It applies to all stakeholders, including citizens undertaking home renovations, builders, government agencies, and contractors.
The MDCTS will track vehicles carrying C&D waste, enabling the BMC to detect route deviations and illegal dumping. Registration for the system went live recently. Residents performing minor repairs or renovations will also use this system for debris disposal. For larger projects, registration is linked to project details, requiring information on expected waste quantities and disposal locations.
Vehicles transporting debris must be fitted with a GPS-based Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS). This allows the BMC to monitor vehicle movements and ensure compliance with approved routes and destinations. Violations, such as unauthorized transportation or illegal disposal, can result in penalties of up to Rs 25,000 per vehicle.
This system is being implemented due to the significant daily generation of over 8,000 tonnes of C&D waste in Mumbai, while current treatment facilities can only handle approximately 1,200 tonnes daily. The shortfall has led to widespread illegal dumping in various city locations.
