Mumbai's Ganesh Fest: 4 Tonnes of Shoes Reborn
2 Sep
Summary
- BMC recycles nearly four metric tonnes of discarded footwear.
- Refurbished shoes will be distributed to needy school children.
- NGO Green Sole Foundation partners with BMC for the initiative.

Mumbai's Lalbaug-Parel area saw an estimated four metric tonnes of footwear discarded during Ganesh idol arrival processions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a unique waste management program to address this issue. Partnering with the Green Sole Foundation, a non-governmental organization, the BMC will refurbish the collected shoes, sandals, and slippers.
These refurbished items are slated for distribution among underprivileged school children and residents of tribal areas. The initiative, spearheaded by the BMC's F-South ward, aims to reduce waste generated during the Ganesh festival while providing essential items to those in need. The Green Sole Foundation will handle the repair and refurbishment process at their workshop in Bhiwandi.
This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to sustainability and social welfare. By giving discarded footwear a new purpose, the BMC and its partners are demonstrating an innovative approach to festival waste management. The program is expected to continue throughout the entire Ganesh festival, extending its positive impact.
