Residents of Mumbai are grappling with deteriorating air quality, largely attributed to dust from numerous construction projects across the city. Shabnam Abdul Gaffar Shah from Mankhurd slums highlights the severe health impacts, with her entire family suffering from prolonged respiratory ailments.
This widespread pollution is also affecting students and professionals in areas like Matunga. A 2023 study by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board revealed that dust accounts for 30% of PM10 pollution in Mumbai, exacerbating respiratory problems. Doctors report a concerning surge in pediatric respiratory cases, with hospital admissions, including ICU stays for asthmatic children, on the rise.
In response, the Bombay High Court has issued detailed orders for construction sites, including mandatory air quality sensors and water sprinklers. However, a significant number of sites have failed to comply, prompting the court to order the formation of a committee to ensure stricter adherence to pollution control guidelines.
