MP Empowers Vultures: GPS Tracking for Conservation
24 Feb
Summary
- Madhya Pradesh leads India in vulture conservation efforts.
- Vultures are tagged with GPS transmitters for movement monitoring.
- Conservationists aim to understand threats and protect vulture habitats.
Madhya Pradesh has been recognized as a leader in vulture conservation, housing the largest number of vultures in India. This commitment was underscored recently when Chief Minister Yadav released five vultures, including Indian and Cinereous species, equipped with satellite transmitters. This effort is part of a new telemetry program initiated by the MP forest department, in partnership with WWF-India and the Bombay Natural History Society.
The satellite tracking aims to gather crucial data on vulture movements, habitat use, and the challenges they face, such as electrocution and poisoning. This scientific information will inform more effective conservation strategies and strengthen landscape-level protection plans, crucial for species like the Cinereous vulture which undertakes long-distance migrations.
Vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem as nature's cleaners, contributing to environmental health and disease prevention. Madhya Pradesh's diverse vulture population includes species like the Indian Long-billed Vulture and Himalayan Griffon. Recent observations in the South Panna Forest Division noted over 1,000 vultures, indicating a positive trend in conservation success.
