Mousehole Flooding Fixed: School Gets New Playground
22 Mar
Summary
- New infrastructure installed to mitigate frequent flash flooding in Mousehole.
- Larger pipes with increased storage capacity reduce flood risk for the village.
- A new school playground was installed alongside flood defense upgrades.

Mousehole has seen substantial improvements to its flood defenses, aimed at reducing the frequent flash flooding that plagues the village. Situated in a steep valley with two watercourses, the village's vulnerability has been addressed by the Environment Agency.
Larger pipes with increased storage capacity have been installed, significantly improving the infrastructure's ability to handle heavy rainfall. These upgrades were crucial as the main culvert runs beneath Mousehole Primary School's play area.
Consequently, a new playground, complete with a wooden ship and cave, was installed at the school. The head teacher reported children's delight and villagers' relief, noting the positive impact of the work during recent storms.
While the Environment Agency acknowledges that complete elimination of flood risk is not possible due to downstream restrictions, these measures are expected to reduce the frequency of flooding incidents. Further steps include providing flood doors to at-risk properties.
