Morocco's Green Revolution: Farming Against the Odds

Morocco is pioneering innovative, environmentally friendly rural development projects designed to enhance agricultural output despite challenging soil conditions and water scarcity. These initiatives aim to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools to withstand the intensifying effects of climate change.

In Al Haouz province, near Marrakech, farms have received government grants for subterranean drip irrigation systems, significantly reducing water consumption. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) provides crucial technical support and training to help farmers increase and diversify their sustainable product yields.

To combat soil erosion caused by torrential rainfall, mountain terracing projects have been implemented, planting thousands of fruit trees to stabilize the landscape. This approach integrates agricultural development with soil conservation efforts.

Addressing the challenge of urban migration, IFAD supports farmers in forming cooperatives for better product marketing. These cooperatives, focusing on olive oil, honey, and meat, create new jobs and offer significant economic benefits, particularly for rural women who gain independent income sources.
