Summary
- Three individuals arrested for harming a monkey at a government college.
- Viral video led forest department to investigate and file charges.
- Fines totaling Rs 50,000 were imposed on the accused.

An incident of monkey abuse at a government polytechnic college near Perambalur has resulted in legal action against three individuals. The forest department initiated action after a video depicting the mistreatment of a monkey went viral on social media platforms.
Instead of reporting the animal's presence to the forest department, college staff reportedly hired animal catchers from Thuraiyur. The captured video shows the monkey being roughly handled, dragged by its tail, and pressed to the ground, actions that caused it harm.
The forest department, alerted by the widespread circulation of the disturbing videos, launched an investigation. Subsequently, charges were filed against two animal catchers and the college security guard who filmed the abuse. They were fined a total of Rs 50,000 under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act for hunting protected animals and failing to report the capture.
Officials emphasized the importance of contacting the forest department directly in cases of animal conflict, rather than employing unauthorized individuals, to ensure the welfare of wildlife.
