Mohali's Sanitation Crisis: Mayor Demands 1,500 Workers
10 Feb
Summary
- Mohali requires 1,500 sanitation workers, but only has 450.
- Councillors report widespread garbage accumulation across city sectors.
- Expanded city limits bring 40,000 residents under MC jurisdiction.

Mohali faces a significant sanitation challenge, prompting Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu and councillors to demand an immediate increase in the municipal corporation's cleaning workforce. The current staff of approximately 450 employees is deemed insufficient for the city's growing population and expanded area.
Councillors highlighted issues such as garbage accumulation on roads, parking lots, and footpaths in multiple sectors. The mayor stated that Mohali requires at least 1,500 sanitation workers to maintain effective cleanliness, a stark contrast to the available manpower. Essential equipment for waste collection is also reported to be lacking.
The Finance and Contract Committee has approved development works worth ₹18.5 crore. Separately, a resolution was passed to include Guru Nanak colony and Aamb Sahib colony within the MC limits, which will extend civic services to approximately 40,000 residents currently lacking basic amenities and documentation support.
