Summary
- Youth-focused platform mobilizes young people for climate action.
- Miss Climate Change auditions held in Mbale city for Eastern Region.
- Winners will advocate for environmental protection in their communities.

A novel approach is being employed to engage young people in environmental advocacy through the Miss Climate Change platform, spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment. This initiative, developed in partnership with Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI), recently held auditions at Mount Elgon Hotel in Mbale city. Twenty-three contestants vied for the opportunity, with three emerging as representatives for the eastern region in the upcoming national competition.
The Miss Climate Change concept was conceptualized approximately three years ago as a creative strategy to involve youth in environmental protection and awareness. Initially focused on the central region, the program has since expanded its reach to other regions to ensure broader youth participation. This expansion is particularly relevant as it leads up to the annual Uganda Water and Environment Week, a national event promoting sustainable water management and environmental protection.
Officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment expressed their goal to transform contestants into climate ambassadors. By integrating this activity into regional environmental week celebrations, the ministry aims to capture the interest of young people in pressing climate issues. The platform seeks to combine youth leadership, advocacy, and community engagement to strengthen climate communication.
The contestants who have advanced will actively participate in environmental campaigns and community outreach programs. Their role will be crucial in promoting sustainable practices and ensuring that climate action becomes a collective endeavor. The recently crowned regional winners have pledged to utilize their influence to champion environmental protection and climate awareness, particularly among their peers and within educational institutions.
