Community Art Highlights River Health Goals
27 Jun
Summary
- Mosaics depict native animals, symbolizing river recovery success.
- Local artist and residents collaborated on the artwork.
- Information board will detail ongoing river restoration efforts.

On June 25, community members celebrated the unveiling of two mosaics at the Beerline Trail in Riverwest. These artworks are central to a new community information board dedicated to the ongoing restoration of the Milwaukee River.
The mosaics, created by artist Jessica Laub in collaboration with Milwaukee Water Commons, depict native animals that signify the river's improving health. Over 50 residents contributed by creating animal tiles at a workshop, a tactile experience that Laub then incorporated into the larger mosaic designs.
This initiative aims to keep the community informed about crucial restoration efforts, such as removing toxic sediment and reintroducing native plant species. These projects are part of a larger regional initiative to clean up polluted sites like the Milwaukee Estuary.
The information board will be regularly updated with details on upcoming restoration work, its long-term benefits, and the progress made in returning the waterways to a state usable for recreation and enjoyment by the community.
