Millions Threatened by Floods, Pollution, and Sewage Crises Across England

According to a recent analysis, communities across England are grappling with a range of pressing environmental threats, including heightened flood risks, dangerous air pollution, and sewage leaks in their local areas.

The research, conducted by the campaign group Friends of the Earth, examined the latest data from various official sources, including government figures, the National Audit Office, Natural England, and the Environment Agency. The findings paint a concerning picture, with millions of people now living in the shadow of these multiple environmental challenges.

One of the most alarming revelations is that the constituency of Boston and Skegness, represented by deputy reform leader Richard Tice, who has opposed climate action, is the most at-risk area for flooding nationwide, with over 90% of homes under threat. Meanwhile, 47 of the 50 worst areas in the country for air pollution are represented by Labour MPs.

The analysis also identified the two constituencies in England with the most hours of sewage overflows, both of which are Conservative seats in Devon. Elsewhere, the same eight constituencies appeared in both the top 20 for the least amount of green space and for extreme heat, seven of which were in London.

As the UK government prepares to release its next climate plan, Friends of the Earth is calling for urgent action to address these pressing environmental issues, including measures to drive down bills, better insulate homes, and create new green jobs.
