Microsoft Buys Carbon Credits from Louisiana Biofuel Plant

Microsoft has announced a significant purchase of 3.6 million carbon removal credits from C2X, which operates a biofuels plant in Louisiana. This facility is scheduled to commence operations in 2029, focusing on transforming forestry waste into methanol. Methanol produced will serve multiple industries, including shipping, aviation, and chemical manufacturing, with the plant capable of producing over 500,000 metric tons.

As part of the agreement, the plant is designed to capture and store approximately 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, with plans for underground sequestration. This initiative is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to offset emissions, particularly those related to its rapidly growing data center infrastructure, which challenges its 2030 carbon neutrality pledge.

The company has recently engaged in several other substantial carbon removal purchases, indicating an accelerated effort to meet its environmental commitments. These ongoing acquisitions aim to balance the company's operational carbon footprint and secure future carbon removal capacity.
