Barren Land Blooms: MGNREGA Transforms Drought Zone
6 Jun
Summary
- A 15-acre barren area in Bidar district is now a lush forest.
- Over 4,000 saplings were planted, creating a dense canopy.
- The project improved groundwater and generated rural employment.

A significantly degraded, drought-prone area in Bidar district has been revitalized into a thriving forest spanning 15 acres. This transformation, executed under the MGNREGA, has restored ecological balance and enhanced local water resources. The initiative, spearheaded by the Social Forestry Department, saw the planting of over 4,000 native saplings, including Peepal and Teak, creating a dense, natural-looking woodland.
The project's success extends beyond greenery, with a newly constructed check dam conserving rainwater and boosting groundwater levels. This has led to year-round water availability in local borewells, improving irrigation prospects for farmers. Furthermore, the afforestation efforts generated more than 200 man-days of employment through MGNREGA.
Officials are encouraged by the project's tangible benefits, including improved soil moisture, shelter for wildlife, and enhanced rural livelihoods. Plans are underway to expand the plantation, continuing soil and water conservation measures to further develop this vital green asset.
