Metrowater's Sewage Overhaul to Ease Flooding Woes in Ambattur
27 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Metrowater to replace 11.25-km sewer main pipeline from Padi to Kodungaiyur STP
- ₹106.42-crore project aims to reduce recurring sewage-related complaints
- Complaints expected to drop by 50% in Korattur and Padi once work is completed

In September 2025, Metrowater is poised to complete a crucial project to address the recurring sewage problems faced by residents in the Ambattur zone, particularly in areas like Korattur and Padi. The ₹106.42-crore initiative involves replacing an 11.25-km sewer main pipeline that runs from Padi to the Kodungaiyur sewage treatment plant (STP).
The aging 900-mm diameter pipeline, which collects and conveys sewage to the treatment plant, has been prone to leaks, leading to frequent bursts and sewage overflows, especially during heavy rains. This has been a persistent issue for locals, with areas like Central Avenue and 18th Street in TNHB Colony facing regular sewage inundation.
To address this, Metrowater is upgrading the pipeline to a 1,000-mm diameter cast iron structure, which will have a capacity to handle 30.5 million litres of sewage daily. Nearly 98% of the work has been completed, and officials expect a significant reduction in complaints - by at least 50% - in Korattur and Padi once the project is finished by mid-October.
The new pipeline, which runs along the Inner Ring Road, Madhavaram roundabout, and GNT Road, will also help reduce overflow from the recently upgraded Korattur sewage pumping station, which now features an odour-control system. Residents are hopeful that this long-awaited infrastructure upgrade will finally provide relief from the recurring sewage woes that have plagued their neighborhoods for years.
