Meenachil River Choked by Monsoon Waste
9 Sep
Summary
- Monsoon floods cause waste accumulation, increasing flood risk.
- Community-led cleaning drive targets Meenachil River debris.
- River pollution threatens a major regional drinking water source.

The Meenachil River faces a severe threat each monsoon as swollen waters carry accumulated plastic waste, household articles, and vegetation, causing blockages and exacerbating flood risks along its banks. Major commercial hubs like Pala and Kottayam are directly impacted by this recurring issue.
A collaborative community effort has been launched to clear the river and its check dams, ensuring unimpeded water flow. The initiative began with a three-day cleaning drive at the Kalariyamakkal Kadavu check dam, a joint operation by the Pala municipality and local volunteer groups.
This cleanup is vital for maintaining water flow and safeguarding the river's quality, which is a primary drinking water source for the area. Waste removed from the riverbed, including plastics and logs, has been handed over to relevant authorities for disposal and repurposing.
The Meenachil River Protection Council is also developing a comprehensive river protection project for submission to the government. This proactive measure aims to address the persistent problem of waste entering the river from its banks and surrounding areas during heavy rains.
