This ambitious expansion represents an investment of approximately $792 billion, surpassing the total planned generation capacity of the United States. The initiative positions the Mediterranean as a significant player in the global energy transition.
Nearly two-thirds of these projects, totaling 361.3 GW, are targeted for commercial operation by 2030. Achieving these goals would increase the region's operational solar and wind capacity by 43%, contributing substantially to its power mix. Spain is at the forefront, leading in prospective solar capacity and ranking high in wind power, significantly reducing fossil fuel influence on electricity prices and benefiting consumers with monthly savings.
Egypt is also a key emerging leader in North Africa, with nearly 100 GW of wind and solar projects in its pipeline, much of it linked to green hydrogen applications. Other notable countries include Greece, Italy, Morocco, France, and the Western Sahara. Experts emphasize that while progress is impressive, overcoming infrastructural barriers like outdated energy grids will be crucial to realizing the full potential of these renewable energy plans.
