Nature-Based Solutions Boost Climate Resilience in Mediterranean
27 Oct
Summary
- Project integrates nature-based expertise with engineering for climate resilience.
- Digital Toolset aids in assessing climate risks and decision-making.
- Nine European regions participate, with five testing climate adaptation solutions.

The European cooperation project Med-IREN is actively working to shield Mediterranean communities and vital infrastructure from the escalating impacts of climate change. This initiative strategically merges nature-based expertise with innovative engineering developments to bolster resilience against extreme weather events.
A recent meeting in Larnaca, Cyprus, on October 21-22, 2026, allowed partners to review progress and plan the next phases, emphasizing the transition from methodology development to practical implementation across participating territories.
The project utilizes a sophisticated Digital Toolset, which incorporates monitoring systems, satellite data, and digital models. This suite helps assess climate risks and supports crucial decision-making processes for local authorities, academics, and civil society.
Med-IREN involves nine European regions. Five Mediterranean areas are piloting solutions for climate resilience, while four other EU regions are replicating these activities to evaluate their broader applicability. Case studies address diverse risks including heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and coastal erosion.
The next gathering of project partners is slated for Ischia during the week of April 5-11, 2027, to further advance these critical efforts.
