Centre Directs MCD to Erase Waste Along Delhi Tracks
4 Nov
Summary
- MCD ordered to clear waste dumped on 18.93km of railway land.
- Action plan for garbage accumulation along tracks due within 15 days.
- Waste poses environmental, public health, and operational safety risks.
The central government has issued a directive to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to clear substantial waste accumulations along railway tracks and land. This action follows a recent meeting where the railway ministry highlighted issues with solid waste dumped at 125 sites across 18.93km of railway land. The MCD is now tasked with mapping these problematic areas and presenting a comprehensive action plan within 15 days.
The meeting, chaired by the Union home secretary, emphasized the urgency due to environmental hazards, public health risks, and operational safety concerns. The Railway Board pointed out that unauthorized encroachments and colonies contribute significantly to the dumping. Consequently, the MCD has been instructed to implement daily door-to-door waste collection in adjoining areas, including unauthorized habitations, to prevent further accumulation.
As part of a broader cleanliness initiative, awareness campaigns involving local communities and NGOs are also planned. This directive builds upon previous efforts, including a December 2023 clean-up that removed over 9,500 tonnes of waste along 105km of tracks. The goal is to ensure all railway tracks in Delhi are cleared.
