Massive Haul of Illegal Animal Parts Seized in Vietnam

On October 3rd, 2025, Vietnamese authorities in Vinh Long province made a significant bust in the fight against illegal wildlife trafficking. They seized over 7 metric tons (15,000 pounds) of prohibited animal products, ranging from pangolin scales and python skins to animal bile and fish gills.
The two smugglers, one from Vietnam and one from Indonesia, were apprehended but could not provide any documentation for the vast array of protected animal parts they were transporting on their boats. The haul included more than 4.2 tons of suspected pangolin scales, 150 python skins, 40 kilograms of animal bile, and various other animal remains such as bird beaks, animal bones, and unidentified hides.
Experts say this massive seizure is a clear indication of the industrial-scale, organized crime behind the illegal wildlife trade. "If you manage to get 12,000 pangolins killed and skinned, if you get 39 beheaded hornbills, if you get 1.6 tons of fish skin ... that means you are a big player," said researcher Vincent Nijman. "It's industrial size, commercial, illegal trafficking. Organized crime, guaranteed."

The trafficking of these protected species has serious consequences for the environment and biodiversity. According to the IUCN, over 48,600 species are currently threatened with extinction, and the removal of keystone species can have cascading effects on entire ecosystems. Authorities in Vietnam are working to crack down on this illicit trade, but the country remains a major hub for animal contraband.
