Oil Spill Blackens Market Harborough Ditch
23 Mar
Summary
- Oil pollution discovered in a ditch near Market Harborough homes.
- Environment Agency deployed a tanker for containment and cleanup.
- Samples taken, source traced, and cleanup efforts are ongoing.

A substantial oil pollution incident occurred in a drainage ditch adjacent to the A6 road on the eastern side of Market Harborough. The contamination, discovered on Friday morning, has turned approximately 400 meters of the watercourse black and produced an overpowering, nauseating stench. Residents expressed concerns about the pollution spreading, though it is believed that containment has prevented it from reaching the River Welland.
The Environment Agency responded promptly, deploying a tanker on Saturday to contain the spill and prevent further spread. Cleanup operations are continuing on Monday. Samples of the oil have been collected for testing, and the agency has successfully traced the source of the pollution. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information regarding the cause of the incident.
While the cleanup is in progress, the Environment Agency has reported no impact on local wildlife and is actively monitoring the situation. The spill is located approximately 60 meters from the nearest homes, affecting an area popular with dog-walkers. Harborough District Council has offered its assistance to the Environment Agency in resolving the situation.
