Manitoba provincial parks are set to welcome visitors to new mini cabins, with the initial six expected to be ready for rent in St. Malo Provincial Park by early summer 2026. This initiative by the provincial government aims to make nature more accessible to a broader range of people.
The first phase of construction in St. Malo, costing $2.5 million, includes a new washroom facility and six wheelchair-accessible mini cabins. These cabins are situated along the shore of St. Malo Lake and are designed to comfortably house six individuals.
Each cabin is equipped with bunk beds and amenities comparable to yurts in other parks, including an outdoor cooking area and electrical connections at each bunk. Construction is being handled by Winnipeg-based companies, Iris Design and Build, and National Carpentry and Insulation.
Further expansion is planned, with mini cabins slated for Camp Morton, north of Gimli. Reservations for the St. Malo cabins will be available online or by phone at a price just under $90.
The design emphasizes comfort, convenience, and durability, with features like small shelves for personal items and electrical outlets for modern campers. The government stressed the importance of using local companies and workers for this project, contrasting with previous yurt rentals that were manufactured in the United States.
